My role as meetings manager will be to create the best possible environment for the members of STC and other technical communication professionals to learn from the experts, have the opportunity to improve their skills and to spend time exchanging ideas with each other. STC is the leading professional organization for the industry and the best source for information. I look forward to assisting in making the conferences the definitive meeting place.
Conferences are more than just rooms with tables and chairs. Conferences provide a vehicle for networking with peers, communicating information, and recognizing those who have excelled in their profession. STC’s mission for providing opportunities for ongoing learning and professional networking to its members is implemented with the annual conferences, regional and chapter local meetings.
Elaine Gilliam brings more than 15 years of meeting planning experience to the position of meetings manager with STC. She was with the American Diabetes Association for three years as the director of convention operations. Before working with the ADA, she worked with Document Management Industries Association (a trade association) for 12 years handling all aspects of all their meetings. Prior to that Elaine held a position with Xerox Corporation planning sales team meetings and customer visits that included transportation, lodging, catering and special events.
Elaine has in-depth knowledge of contract negotiations which will be a benefit for future STC annual conferences as well as an excellent resource for the regions and chapters as they plan their local meetings. She is experienced with the development and monitoring of event budgets, overseeing on-site activities and working with all associated service providers. This set of skills will help STC in keeping expenses in check and still provide the best possible venues for STC’s meetings.
Elaine has planned meetings in some of the largest convention centers in the United States, including Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Moscone Center in San Francisco, Navy Pier in Chicago and the Philadelphia Convention Center. In addition, she has planned board of directors’ meetings and knows the level of service these meetings require.
Her varied association experience gives Elaine a thorough understanding of the needs of association members. She recognizes the value a well organized meeting adds to an organization, and is sensitive to the needs of the attendees so that they will be able to get the most from the time they invest at a meeting.
