Q: What are your personal reasons for wanting to serve as Vice President and subsequently President?
I believe I have a lot to offer the Society, and these positions provide a great way for me to give back for all STC has done for me. I believe I can help provide the leadership we need to strengthen the Society and focus on delivering value in a cost-effective manner. I also believe I can bring a diverse group of people together and help build consensus to move forward.
Technical communication continues to be a fast-paced, growing field. As new generations enter the field and existing generations find new ways to meet changing demands, we need the Society to grow and develop with these changing needs. My STC experience will help me understand the way we have done things in the past as we identify ways to support our communities and our members for the future.
Through STC I have formed business connections, developed close friendships, and started a family (my wife and I coincidentally joined on the exact same date in 1997, and eventually connected through STC opportunities!). I want to help new members find jobs, existing members strengthen their careers, and senior members discover opportunities for contributing their expertise. This is what STC gives me, and I want others to likewise benefit.
Having worked with the Board, I know the challenges that can stand in the way of achieving growth, stability, and member value. I know our resource limitations, and the importance of making wise decisions in how, where, and when to invest as we grow.
STC, who I am, and what I do are all inter-related. My business is intertwined with STC success. I have many friends in STC whose input and advice I value. My family strongly backs my continued contributions to the Society. These are the reasons behind my personal interest in serving as VP, and what fuels my desire to see STC thrive in the coming years.
