STC Election Results
STC's 2011 Election closed on 30 March, and the results were announced on 1 April. Congratulations to Alan Houser for his election to Vice President, Aiessa Moyna for her election to Treasurer, Rich Maggiani and Tricia Spayer for their election to Director, and Jack Molisani and Leah Guren for their election to the Nominating Committee. Congratulations to the winners! STC would like to thank all the candidates for their efforts in the 2011 Election.
The Summit Approaches!
There's less than three weeks until the start of the 2011 Technical Communication Summit, taking place 15-18 May in Sacramento, CA! Even more immediate is the deadline for the Advance Rate—that's Friday, 29 April. After that day, the rate not only goes up to $1,295 instead of $995, but only on-site registration in Sacramento will be accepted. Register now at the Summit website.
For those who have already registered, don't forget about the preconference and post-conference education available! Preconference workshops and certificate courses are available for an added fee, while four post-conference sessions are free for everyone. Finally, if you're a community leader or are thinking about volunteering in the future, Leadership Day is for you! Cost is $20; see the Summit blog for details and a draft agenda.
April Intercom is Open to the Public
STC has opened the April issue of Intercom to the public in a special sneak peek. Please feel to share the link with friends, coworkers, and colleagues in the tech comm world. This is a great way to show others the value of STC publications and invite them to join! The archive material still requires a password, but any article from the April issue is open to all. That includes an interview with the inventor of FrameMaker, a review of MadCap Flare 7, a look at the Help 2.0 revolution, and exploring a documentation strategy.
STC Website Update
The My STC Network section of the STC website is almost here. STC invited community leaders (SIG managers, chapter presidents, and community webmasters) into the site as a special testing group in mid-April, and the leaders provided some extremely valuable feedback and found a few things to work on. Keep an eye out for an announcement of My STC opening up to the entire membership soon. In the meantime, see STC's Notebook for a brief Q&A with one of the community leaders and her thoughts on the site.
Meet the Staff
With a few new staffers and the Summit coming up, now is a good time to introduce or reintroduce the staff members to STC members. Starting last month and over the near future, we'll highlight a staff member or two each week so our members can get to know us a bit more. See all of them as they're posted on STC's Notebook or collected under the staff tag.
Certificate Courses Return in June
STC Certificate Courses highlight our educational calendar in June, with a pair of popular courses returning. Leah Guren presents TechComm 101: International, her popular intro course timed specifically for our international members, taking place Tuesdays from 21 June through 2 August from 6:00-7:30 AM GMT. And Sharon Burton again presents Topic-Based Authoring, Tuesdays from 7 June through 12 July, 10:30 AM to Noon EDT (GMT-4). Live Web Seminars return in June as well; see the full schedule on the STC website.
Don't forget that you can see a collection of events STC communities are hosting as part of STC's Notebook. Many of the events are online, and all STC members are invited. May's events will be posted soon, so please bookmark the Community Events page and visit it regularly!
Read STC Publications
Online access to Intercom and Technical Communication are part of your membership. View the latest issues of each for articles and research that can affect the way you do your job or give you a heads up on new ideas, tools, and theories. Don't forget, though, you must log in to read the full articles.
STC's Notebook has compiled links to technical communication blogs, including the top 25 most influential bloggers (as named by MindTouch), member blogs, and important nonmember blogs. See the current list here. Want to see yours included? Email Kevin Cuddihy with the URL.
Links of Interest
STC's Notebook provides a weekly set of Links of Interest most Fridays, with links to blogs and articles discovered through Twitter, emails, and other means over the previous week. The new News and Notes will include links to those blog postings so you can review the Links of Interest at your leisure. If you have a link you think other STC members would be interested in, please email Kevin Cuddihy.
